It's the end of an era.

One of the most popular pizza joints in Portland, Maine, has announced its closure.

Anthony's Italian Kitchen will be closing its doors after 33 years.

Anthony's Italian Kitchen in Portland, Maine, Closing

What a run it has been for Anthony Barrasso and his family-run Italian kitchen.

Portland will miss those large slices of delicious pizza, tasty Italian classics, and perfectly made sandwiches. It's been a true institution since opening in 1992.

Anthony's has had quite a history. At one point, it was part of three legendary Portland stores that all called the basement of 151 Middle Street in the Old Port home. You had Bull Moose Music on one side, Videoport on the other side, with Anthony's right in between.

Who didn't love pulling off the trifecta of renting a movie, buying a CD, and hammering down a perfectly seasoned slice of pie?

The shop was also part of the short-lived Portland Marketplace on Preble Street, where, according to Portland Food Map, you could find Anthony's Outpost.

Anthony's Italian Kitchen in Portland, Maine, Rescued by the Barstool Fund

During the pandemic, Anthony's made the news when Dave Portnoy's Barstool Fund helped keep the restaurant in business.

The Barstool Fund, which has supported over 440 businesses since its inception in 2020, helped keep Anthony's rolling through the pandemic and made sure Barrasso could retire when the time was right.

On a personal note, I should mention that I always appreciated Anthony's for never giving me hell for paying with handfuls of change back in the day when a young Chris Sedenka was a broke-ass musician, living way beyond his means in Portland.

In fact, Anthony and his crew probably deserve a James Beard Award for their impeccable service and graciousness to the community.

I'll miss the great food, Anthony's warm welcome when you walk in, the incredible sports and pop culture history littered throughout the shop, and the wonderful shows that supported so many local crooners.

Best of luck to Anthony in retirement. And congratulations to him and the rest of the Barrasso family for making a difference in the Portland community with delicious food and warm smiles.

Anthony's last day open will be February 7, 2025, so make sure you get in there before the curtain is dropped for good.
