Below Zero Temps Shut Down Portland Schools

The bitterly cold, below zero temperatures have forced the Portland public schools to close on Thursday, according to the school district's web site.

"The Portland Public Schools will be closed on Thursday, Jan. 8, 2015 due to the extreme cold. The frigid temperature is affecting the fuel lines of school buses, impeding their operation. Please call the Recreation Information Hotline at 756-8130 for updates regarding any cancellation of after-school programs," reads a statement on the Portland Public  Schools web site.

Overnight, temperatures fell well below zero. According to WMTW.com, temperatures are expected to slowly moderate over the next few days.
