News Center Maine is reporting that Portland schools have confirmed at least 3 cases of whooping cough and officials say there are probably more.

There has been one case at Longfellow Elementary, according to the article, and Tess Nacelewicz, the Communications Coordinator for Portland Public Schools stated that there have been 2 other confirmed cases at Lincoln Middle School and most recently one at Deering High School.

The article says there is another presumed case at Longfellow and a third case that is being tested at Lincoln Middle.

The cases have been reported to the Maine Center for Disease Control, and the CDC has talked with school nursing staff as well as sending a letter to parents and all staff at each school, according to the article.

The Center for Disease Control says this is a highly contagious disease and that the best way to protect against it is by getting vaccinated.
