Major accolades came to one of Maine's most prestigious colleges recently. US News & World Report released its annual list of the best liberal arts colleges in America, and Bowdoin College found itself in the Top 10.

The Brunswick private university came in with a ranking of 6th in the nation. It actually shares the 6th distinction with Carleton College in Minnesota.

It's quite an honor for the school, known as one of the "Little Ivy's." Bowdoin is no stranger to high honors, but always looks pretty good ranked high when stacked up against your peers.

One main reason for Bowdoin's high ranking is its wealth of student activities and options. US News & World Report highlights many of them.

The Bowdoin Polar Bears compete in 30 varsity sports in the NCAA Division III New England Small College Athletic Conference. Bowdoin has more than 100 student organizations. One of the largest and most active groups is the Outing Club, which offers around 150 excursions each year. Peucinian Society, founded in 1805, is one of the oldest literary and intellectual societies in the country, with alumni including poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow.

Bowdoin also cleaned up in others categories, including Top 15 rankings in Best Undergraduate Teaching (ranked 3rd), Best Value Schools (7th), First-Year Experiences (15). The school's complete rankings are listed on the institution's profile found on the US News & World Report's college database.

While Bowdoin was the only Maine school to make the Top 10 in the liberal arts category, the state's two other "Little Ivy's" weren't too far down the list. Colby College came in at the 25th spot, with Bates College just behind it at 26.

These are tremendous rankings for the three schools, and a masterclass of education that only Connecticut could dream about.
