Maine’s Cooper Flagg Drops 51, Shatters Yet Another NBA Record
He hasn't even finished his rookie season yet, but are we already asking the question: What can’t Cooper Flagg do?
The Maine Event has done it again, folks. The Newport native has broken yet another NBA record in the incredible season he’s having.
Cooper Flagg Scores 51 points in an NBA Game
Flagg became the first teenager in NBA history to score 50 points or more, following a 51-point performance against the Orlando Magic in a 138–127 loss. It should be noted that Flagg broke his own record for most points scored by a teenager in a game—his previous high was 49.
Flagg scored his 51 points by going 19-of-30 from the field, including six made three-pointers and seven made free throws. He also finished with six rebounds, three assists, three steals, and even a technical foul. Talk about a total performance.
Clearly, Flagg is everything—and more—than what was advertised to teams. The phenom seems to be getting better by the game as he continues to do it all for an undermanned Dallas Mavericks squad. And even though Dallas has officially been eliminated from playoff contention, Flagg is not slowing down one bit.
Flagg has done just about everything so far this season. He’s been the unquestioned leader, often playing multiple positions, including point guard, because of consistent holes in the roster. That’s a lot to ask of any young player, and asking a 19-year-old rookie to take on that role speaks volumes. Clearly, this team trusts Flagg, and for good reason.
Currently, Flagg leads the team in scoring (20.3 points per game), ranks third in rebounding (6.6), second in assists (4.5), and first in steals (1.2). Those numbers have continued to improve throughout the season, which is evident when looking at his performance over the past few months.
Will Cooper Flagg Win NBA Rookie of the Year?
While a playoff run is out of the question for Flagg and the Mavs, a run at Rookie of the Year is certainly within reach. Flagg and former Duke teammate Kon Knueppel appear to be the runaway favorites for the coveted award. It will be interesting to see how both players perform over the final stretch of the season.

Best of luck to Flagg the rest of the way. It's been quite the calendar year for him, going from college sensation to NBA star. Just imagine what the future holds, especially when Dallas surrounds him with more talent.
