On the baseball diamond, he made pitchers sweat. Now, he’s filling them up.

As he debuted in 2004 as one of the self-proclaimed “idiots” who came back from being down 3-0 against the Yankees en route to the franchise’s first World Series win in 86 years, Kevin Youkilis likely got a crash course on New England’s fondness for alcoholic refreshments.

Several All-Star appearances, a Gold Glove, and another World Series win later, the man who could play first or third better than any in the league is now balancing two other positions: color analyst for Sox games on NESN, and founder of his own California brewery.

Located in Los Gatos, a town in the San Francisco Bay area, just south of San Jose, the Loma Brewing Company serves award-winning beer as well as acclaimed coffee to go along with its locally sourced menu.

While he will be busy during the baseball season after taking over for the legendary Dennis Eckersley in the broadcast booth, Loma is more than just a hobby for Youkilis. In fact, brewing might be in his blood.

According to a 2019 article in Sports Illustrated, Youkilis’s great uncle was a Canadian by the name of Morris Youkilis, who brought alcohol across the border during prohibition. Doing so allowed him to move his siblings to the U.S.

When Youkilis’ career was cut short due to injury, he decided to pivot and launched the successful NoCal business (if the story of a former Red Sox player running a bar sounds familiar, it should, as that was also the basis for the most famous television show set in New England).
