The anticipation is building for Costco's first location in Maine. If you've driven by the Scarborough Downs area recently, you've noticed that construction is moving quickly and an official grand opening date isn't far away.

With so much hype and excitement around the warehouse store's launch, there's a couple things you should know before you plan to walk through the doors at Costco and begin your shopping experience.

Costco is a Membership Club

Similar to Sam's Club and BJ's, you'll need to be a member at Costco in order to process transactions. Once you've joined, each individual on your account receives a membership card.

The last step of the process to confirm your membership is to add a photo to your membership card. And when the grand opening of Costco in Scarborough does finally happen, that piece of the process is going to cause headaches for some.

Online Membership Versus In-Person

Many people have already purchased memberships for Costco online as they prepare for the Scarborough opening. But they'll still need to snap a photo and grab a physical membership card during their first visit to the store.

That small but important detail will lead to lines before people can begin shopping in the store, unless you get a jump on things now by visiting the official Costco membership sign-up location.

You Can Get Your Physical Membership Card Now

Right outside the Walmart plaza next to US Cellular, a Costco membership store has opened. Inside, you'll be able to go through the process of activating your membership and leave that day with a physical card in your hand.

When the grand opening of the warehouse store rolls around, you'll be able to shop and checkout freely and avoid any service desk holdups.
