More than a year ago, news broke that Aldi, a German-based grocery store chain, would finally be making their way to Maine.

Aldi would be occupying the space left behind by Big Lots at the Pine Tree Shopping Center in Portland.

It didn't take long for anticipation to kick in, especially with the belief that Aldi would complete the proper permitting and construction to be open by October or November of 2025.

But that didn't happen.

In fact, Aldi announced that their grand opening would be delayed until early in 2026 with the hopes of a February grand opening.

That isn't happening either.

According to WMTW, "construction shifts" are the reason behind yet another delay for the grand opening of Aldi in Portland, Maine.

If you've driven by the Pine Tree Shopping Center over the last month or so, you've noticed significant progress both to the exterior and interior of the store.

The good news that Aldi plans to announce a firm grand opening date within weeks as well as a celebration to mark the moment of the company's first expansion into Maine.

While the German-based grocery chain Aldi is the headliner at the Pine Tree Shopping Center, something else is on the way that may exciting visitors as well.

Workout chain Crunch Fitness is progressing with their renovation of the former JoAnn Fabric store. The Portland location will be the first in Maine for Crunch Fitness. It's expected to have a grand opening sometime this spring.
