New Amtrak Downeaster Station to Be Built in Portland, Maine

For over a year, there have been rumblings about the Amtrak transportation center in Portland, Maine, moving from its current location at Thompson's Point.

The reasoning was sound. In order for trains to load and unload at the Portland station, railcars needed to exit the mainline. That process has led to delays for trains and frustration for passengers.

According to the Portland Press Herald, Amtrak will officially move its Downeaster station to another location in Portland thanks to a massive federal grant. The question is, where?

Amtrak Still Looking For a New Downeaster Station Location in Portland, Maine

While the news of the $40+ million dollar grant will give Amtrak the ability to build a brand new state-of-the-art transportation center in Portland, Maine, the company has yet to reveal where.

Initially, Amtrak was considering moving their station to the Mercy Hospital campus area. But there has been disputes with MaineHealth over the viability.

Another potential location along St. John Street remains in discussion as well. However, there is already substantial congestion in the area.

Could Another New Site Be Considered For Amtrak in Portland, Maine?

The ultimate goal of moving the current Amtrak station is for passenger cars to stay on the main line to avoid disruptions and delays as much as possible.

As the Portland Hearts of Pine soccer club plans to build a new stadium along Cassidy Point in Portland, it's possible another location could come into play.

There could be room for a new transportation center along Cassidy Point, with easier access to the Old Port for visitors. Additionally, it would keep the transportation center on the main line.

Amtrak is expected to announce their station plans in the coming months.
