Afar Says 125-Mile Coastal Drive in Maine is ‘Where to Go’ for 2025
There are so many places to go across the globe and so little time to get to see it all. For many years running, people have chosen Maine as one of those places they just have to see. From the gorgeous coastline to the quaint towns, the charm alone has driven people in masses to Vacationland.
More recently, people have become fixated on visiting Acadia National Park and spending time in some of Maine's most seasonably busy beach towns. But what if you could see all that coastal beauty, small town charm and culinary deliciousness without having to battle large crowds and high prices?
Travel site Afar thinks you can do just that. They've put the Bold Coast in Maine on their list of 25 where-to-go places in the world for 2025 alongside places like Chios, Greece, Guyana as well as the Danish Riviera.
What Exactly is the Bold Coast of Maine?
If you're unfamiliar with the Bold Coast Scenic Byway, it's a 125-mile stretch that extends from the small town of Milbridge and ends in the small town of Lubec. If you did a nonstop drive of the bold coast, it would take you around three hours to complete it.
There's some incredible scenic overlooks, villages and culinary gems to enjoy some true Maine cooking along the way.
Afar Has Some Suggestions for Your Trip on the Bold Coast
Afar suggests you make several stops along the way and immerse yourself in the lesser seen parts of Maine. That includes in the place you're likely to kick off your bold coast journey, Milbridge. Milbridge offers sea excursions and is considered to be the heart of blueberry country in Maine.
As you continue on your drive, you'll arrive in the town of Machias where a former New York City chef has set up an acclaimed restaurant inside of a former dairy barn. Eat merrily and embrace the history.
And no trip along the Bold Coast would be complete without a trip to Quoddy Head Lighthouse in Lubec. It's become popular enough that celebrities have visited just to watch the first sunrise of the day happen.
When is the Best Time to Travel the Bold Coast in Maine?
That is totally up to what you want to see and experience. According to Maine.gov, spring is a great time to visit if you love birdwatching, less traffic and don't mind inconsistent weather conditions.
Summer is ideal. Driving conditions are typically fantastic, seasonal restaurants and tours are open for business and Maine's wildlife is at their peak availability. There's also the annual Blueberry Festival in August.
Fall also offers plenty in the ways of birdwatching and wildlife as well as some stunning foliage views along the Bold Coast.
