Maine is huge...like really huge, and much of it is extraordinarily remote.

That’s unquestionably part of its charm. Take a drive through the backcountry and you’ll pass signs for places like “T2 R9” and other oddly named townships. It’s classic Maine: quiet, remote, peaceful, and amazingly free of traffic.

Maine is also home to some surprisingly large towns. In fact, 48 of the state’s municipalities cover 50 square miles or more, a remarkable number for the Pine Tree State.

While you’ll find them in 11 of Maine’s 16 counties, it’s no surprise that a significant portion are located in the northern part of the state. Aroostook, Penobscot, and Piscataquis counties are well represented. However, the western foothills also make a respectable showing.

The largest town in Maine is Allagash, which also happens to be the only town with an area exceeding 100 square miles, 128.6, to be exact. The remaining towns are a great representation of communities across the state, each with its own unique identity.
