Maine's most famous sandwich has been named one of the most iconic in the country.

America's Most Legendary Sandwiches

The popular foodie site Spoonful Wanderer recently dove into the magical world of the sandwich. I mean, who wouldn't want to do that? The sandwich is one of the greatest categories of food there is—two slices of bread with unlimited possibilities in between. It's quite possibly the most versatile thing one can create and consume. But, back to the article.

Spoonful Wanderer put together a list of what they consider the most legendary regional sandwiches in this great country of ours.

Just 15 sandwiches were selected for this highly prestigious list, with one being Maine's most famous. According to Spoonful Wanderer, the Maine lobster roll is a true legend.

Maine Lobster Roll

Of course, the Maine lobster roll is one of the most legendary sandwiches in America. It has everything an iconic sandwich should have: a buttery toasted hot dog bun filled with fresh-picked lobster meat, and either butter or mayonnaise, lemon juice, and possibly some herbs or lettuce. Simple, yet effective.

Maine lobster rolls can also be found in every town in Maine—not just in restaurants, but quite literally everywhere. You can find them in variety stores, specialty stores, lobster shacks, high-end establishments, fast food joints, food trucks, and supermarkets. Heck, you can even get one from the gas station near my house.

History of the Lobster Roll

The funny thing is the lobster roll wasn't even invented in Maine. The sandwich was first created in Milford, Connecticut, in 1929. However, it quickly made its way through New England, where it ultimately became a Maine staple—just another sign of how Maine reigns supreme in New England.

So, why did Spoonful Wanderer name the Maine lobster roll one of the most legendary sandwiches in America? Let's see what they had to say.

The iconic split-top bun gets a light butter toast on both outer sides, creating a golden-brown exterior that adds the perfect textural contrast to the tender lobster meat inside... The combination of fresh seafood, crispy bread, and coastal breeze makes this sandwich a true New England classic that’s worth traveling for.

Lobster, toasted buttery bread, and the Maine scenery certainly are a worthy combination—one that's good enough to place it on a list with other legends like the Reuben, French Dip, and Cuban.

Congrats to the beloved lobster roll for bringing even more amazing publicity to Maine. It's just another shining example of how lucky we are here.

You can check out the rest of the list here. I am proud to say I have eaten the majority of the sandwiches on this list—though I'm not sure my doctor would be too proud.
