Maine Mom’s Genius Hat Trick To Keep Black Flies Out Of Your Face
One of the silver linings to come out of the Covid 19 pandemic is that people are getting outside more to commune with nature. It is so rejuvenating breathe in the fresh Maine air and soak up the sunshine.
Now that spring is in full swing and the days are getting warmer and warmer as we head into Memorial Day weekend, most of us are leaving the living room Netflix binges behind and stepping out of the house for an adventure. That is all good. You know what isn't? BLACK FLIES!
I realized that they were back full-on, last weekend. Our family went on a hike at Rines Forest in Cumberland Center on Saturday. Of course we packed snacks and water, but we forgot something very important. Bug Spray!
I tell ya what, though. I feel like every time I get slicked up with bug spray, the black flies are undeterred from buzzing around my head and diving right in to muckle on. Ouch!
I must've had 4 or 5 of them bastids fly into my eyes during our otherwise charming walk in the woods. Well now, thankfully there may be a solution to keep these miserable pests (often referred to by locals as the "Maine State Bird") out of our faces.
Here comes a funny Mom from Norway to the rescue. Danielle Wadsworth shows us a genius hat trick that attracts the black flies. She taped a sticky fly trap strip to the top of her baseball cap. It looks like it works great. There's an awful lot of bugs getting glued up there. Ahh, success.
I may have to try it next weekend. Yeah, it'll look pretty silly. But, the older I get the less I care about how I look. How about you? Would you do this?
