Maine is a true national treasure.

From its rugged coastline to its rolling foothills and mountains, the Pine Tree State is a natural wonderland. I often think of it as an outdoor playground—an environmental amusement park for anyone seeking both adventure and serenity.

Now, with more people stepping outside to enjoy nature, it should be no surprise to see a rise in attention from national publications. This includes a recent hiking post from one of the most iconic magazines in the country, Reader's Digest.

The popular periodical published an article about the best hike in every state. While you could argue that about 100 trails in Maine could be considered the best, the one chosen by Reader's Digest is an outstanding choice. The magazine's selection is the Mount Kineo State Park trail network.

Located right on Moosehead Lake, this picturesque hike combines four trails that take you to the summit of Mount Kineo, as well as loop around the park. The mountain itself has an elevation of 1,789 feet, making it quite a sight, especially considering it abuts a lake.

The trail is rated easy to moderate, depending on the reference guide you use. However, it's safe to say that the majority of people could easily complete these trails.

Here is a little of why Reader's Digest selected the Mount Kineo State Park Trails as Maine's best:

To get to Mount Kineo State Park, you need to take a shuttle boat from the town of Rockwood...Choose from four different routes (Indian, Bridle, Carriage or North) to the summit, where a converted fire tower sits. From the top, you’ll see a range of mountains in all directions, plus Moosehead Lake down below.

If you want an authentic Maine outdoors experience, look no further than this incredible trail network. I guarantee it will not disappoint.
