You most likely knew that David Bowie had a connection to Maine through contributing to Rustic Overtones' album, Viva Nueva. There's another Portland area musician who once worked the 'Starman' on a legendary late night TV show. When news of Bowie's passing spread on Monday, we decided to reach out to the other local artist who was blessed to play music with him.

He lives in Southern Maine and his name is John Kumnick. John is very close friend of the Blimp and we are honored to have as a member of the WBLM Band. According to his bio, he started playing electric bass as a kid after hearing Jack Bruce with Cream. His passion for the instrument led him to study double bass at the Hartt College of the University of Hartford. He then moved to NYC playing with various bands and went on to play in David Bowie's band on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson in 1980.
How did that happen? John was kind enough to share his (brush with Bowie greatness) story on WBLM this week.
In addition to David Bowie, John has also brought his talents to  Madonna, Cyndi Lauper, Serge Gainsbourg, John Waite, Chuck Berry, Bill Chinnock, Ben E. King, Ron Wood, Nina Hagen, Elliot Easton and of course the WBLM Band.
Thanks for sharing your precious Bowie memories with Blimpville, John.
Watch the performances with Bowie from the Tonight Show on September 5, 1980!
