Mainers Are Some of the Biggest Spenders at the Holidays

Mainers are gonna go to town this holiday season spending over $1200 per person. That's the third most of any state!

24/7 Wall St reviewed spending estimates based on a survey of the average consumer holiday spending by the National Retail Federation and Prosper Insights & Analytics.

That seems official.

Here are the stats for Maine:

• Est. holiday spending in 2019 per person: $1,251 (3rd most)
• Real personal income per capita: $44,831 (11th least)
• Value of a dollar: $0.98 (19th highest)

They broke down holiday spending in three major categories. The biggest one is money spent on gifts for relatives, friends, and colleagues. For gift spending, on average we allow ourselves about a $660 budget. Then comes cards cards and decorations, we spend on average about $230 on that, and then the non-gift self-spending.

A big chunk of the holiday budget goes for food. Ahhhh, yes. The food. It's my favorite thing to spend money on.

If you take out Hawaii, the North and Northeast could spend the most for the holidays. That's about 350 bucks more than the south. Well, it must be us sending all those lobsters for people!
