It's unclear if anyone here in Maine got a solid look at this flaming space-rock the other day, but if you did, chances are you could tell that it was moving pretty darn fast.

According to WABI TV 5, the meteor was first spotted on Sunday evening a little before 5:40. The meteor was travelling overhead (obviously) of Mount Mansfield State Forest in Vermont. According to experts in flying space rocks, they say it was likely travelling in excess of 40,000 miles per hour.

What's really crazy about this is the timing of the discovery. It's fairly common to go outside on a cool, clear night in New England and see space debris burning up in our Earth's atmosphere. However, it's not incredibly common to be able to see them during the day. What does that mean? Well it means that this thing had to be fairly big and bright. How bright? I don't know, I don't work for the space rock police.

There were more than 100 people from around the region that reported seeing the astro chunk. Of course I didn't see it, because I never see anything cool like that. Do you ever feel like you're just one of those people that always misses out on super-cool &*#$ happening all around you? Yeah, me too. Hopefully there will be more daytime meteors that we can see in the future. Until then, keep your eyes pointed at the sky- unless of course you're driving. Or walking. Or biking. Or playing sports. Or reading a book. Or inside a building. Or watching TV. Or reading a book. Or looking for something on the ground. Or explaining to an officer why you just rear-ended somebody.
