My First Maine Halloween in Brunswick Was Such a Vibe
It literally couldn't have been simpler and was one of the most lowkey nights I've had in a while. But somehow was also one of the most fun nights, too. And barely anything happened.
Halloween in Brunswick, Maine
Not only was last night the first Halloween night I've spent in Maine in general, but also the first I've spent in Brunswick. On top of that, it was my first Halloween as a homeowner.
Which meant the first Halloween I had to worry about making sure the front step light was on. The first Halloween I had to worry about having enough candy to hand out. The first Halloween I had to worry about whether my dog Remy would lose his mind for a couple of nonstop hours.
Maine Halloween Surprises
A lot of things surprised me last night, and none of it in a negative way, either. Other than barking the first couple of minutes after he noticed way more people on our street than normal, Remy was completely chill and calm the entire night.
Since my doorbell doesn't work, I sat on my front steps during all trick-or-treating hours, which was the exact same thing one of my neighbors that I actually hadn't met yet did, too. So, in between handing out candy, we got to actually introduce ourselves and get to know each other a bit.
One of the things that surprised me the most, though, was how damn polite the trick-or-treaters were. I remember being a kid and while I was generally decently behaved, I remember other kids grabbing handfuls and handfuls of candy without caring about leaving any for anyone else. Or elbowing their way to the top of the steps to grab candy before anyone else did.
But everyone last night, whether they were little nuggets or teenagers, was super nice. I actually had to tell them they could take more candy after they carefully selected only one little 1-inch-by-1-inch Snickers. Or they'd ask actually ask how much candy they could take. It was the most polite thing ever.
And honestly, one other thing that surprised me? How much I loved what accidentally became my new Halloween tradition last night -- sipping a tequila on the rocks and chomping on Triscuits while handing out candy.
I freakin' love that Maine is my new home. And something as simple as handing out Halloween candy last night reinforced it.
