Popular Meme Page Bodyshames While Falsely Reporting a Gun Incident at a Boston Red Sox Game

Let's not bury the headline here -- this meme clearly contains a typo and was a mistake.

But also, let's not bury the other headline -- this is exactly how false news spreads around, rumors get started, and possible public panic sets in.

Especially when you include misinformation about a city like Boston -- a place that a decade ago dealt with a horrible tragedy during one of the most premiere, marquee, and loved events in the city every single year.

But let's start from the beginning.

Shooting at Baseball Game

According to ABC 7 Chicago, back on Friday, August 25, three women were shot during a Chicago White Sox game at Guaranteed Rate Field. Even though the investigation is ongoing, one of the angles being looked into is that one of the women snuck the gun into the park (although she denies it through her attorney) and her leg wound was self-inflicted.

If, at this point, you're asking yourself what an incident at a baseball game in Chicago has to do with New England, nothing.

At least, that was the case until a popular meme page, meme.ig, reported not only that the incident happened at a Red Sox game but also negatively made light of possible rumors of how the gun was snuck into the park in the first place.

So, as you can see, not only did the page falsely name the Red Sox game as where the incident took place but also felt the need to find a picture of a rather large person with food near their face and "stomach rolls" caption to highlight the fact that an ESPN Chicago reporter posted on X that the gun was snuck into the park in a person's stomach.

And people wonder why no one watches the news or trusts the media anymore.
