I don’t have to tell you how much of a monster Portland, Maine, is when it comes to its food scene.

In fact, the city was literally just named the best foodie small city in America by Food & Wine magazine. So clearly, it isn’t just smoke and mirrors.

While a lot of attention goes toward fine dining establishments, James Beard–nominated chefs, and popular tourist destinations, we shouldn’t forget about the smaller neighborhood joints that truly make the city what it is.

One of those spots just happens to be one of my favorites—and it deserves much more recognition than it gets. I’m talking about the iconic Bayou Kitchen.

One of Portland, Maine's Best Joints, The Bayou Kitchen

Located in Woodford’s Corner, Bayou Kitchen is a breakfast and lunch joint that has been serving up tasty classics and New Orleans–inspired cuisine for decades. The unique menu gives diners an opportunity to enjoy flavors that are quite rare to find around these parts, which makes it a proper destination for foodies from all over.

Folks can dig into signature plates like huevos rancheros, homemade hash, a pancake stack, or a breakfast sandwich loaded with delicious andouille sausage. Each plate comes with perfectly cooked red potato home fries. Plus, they make buttermilk biscuits and jalapeño cornbread in-house, which are perfect complements to the delicious main courses.

And for lunch, get ready for some great New Orleans dishes like red beans and rice, veggie jambalaya, gumbo, and some tasty chilis. It’s the perfect comfort food for any occasion and any season. It also is great with an iced tea which comes in like the largest cup you will ever find. It's quite generous to say the least.

And good luck trying to finish it all in one sitting—there’s usually plenty to take home.

What is the Vibe Like at The Bayou Kitchen in Portland, Maine?

While the food is the highlight, what makes Bayou Kitchen extra special is its amazing character and staff. The ambiance is fantastic. It’s like walking into the most welcoming place imaginable. It also has an entire wall of hot sauces. How can you beat that?

The vibe is perfectly laid-back, especially in the morning. The entire staff is friendly, helpful, and just plain cool. Plus, the music selection is always on point—especially when live Grateful Dead tunes are rocking the joint.

The combination of tasty dishes and a truly unique vibe is what separates Bayou Kitchen from the rest. It’s the type of place any city or town deserves—a spot that simply makes you feel like family. It's also why it's in the rotation of joints that my wife and I love to visit, especially on those weekend mornings when all you need is caffeine and some comfort food.
