See the Back to the Future DeLorean at Windham Middle School Thursday

Windham Middle School students are using a unique way to learn about the opioid crisis thanks to the classic 1985 movie Back to the Future.

For the third year, seventh grade teacher Doug Elder has conducted a Back to the Future themed project with students to study studied the impact of Maine's opioid epidemic, which he calls "Taking Back Maine’s Future."

The goal is to research the epidemic to come up with two possible futures in 2055. One where a solution to the opioid epidemic had been found and where addiction continues to rise. They then write newspaper articles, much like the famous USA Today paper used in the 2015 version of Hill Valley in Back to the Future II, that gives us a look at the two possible outcomes.

To keep that theme running and to celebrate the Windham Middle School students' accomplishments, you can visit the school on Thursday, May 5 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. and see the Back to the Future DeLorean time machine.

The event is absolutely free and in addition to seeing the DeLorean up close, you'll also be able to read the newspapers that the students created and learn what alternate 2055s they have determined could be our future. A world where the opioid crisis has subsided or one where it still continues to be one of Maine's greatest battles.
