Someone Won $200K in Monday’s Powerball Drawing at This Maine Store

You've probably heard by now that the Powerball jackpot for Wednesday's drawing is at $1 billion and the entire country is rushing to lottery retailers to buy their ticket. That's a lot of money, but what some people forget as they focus on what it would be like to be a millionaire, is that there you can still win a lot of money, even if it's not seven to ten figures.

Someone in Maine was one of those winners and they purchased their Powerball ticket at a small convenience store in Buxton, according to a post on the Maine State Lottery's Facebook page.

Monday's winning Powerball numbers were 05, 08, 09, 17, 41 and the Powerball was 21. The winning ticket holder in Maine matched four numbers plus the Powerball and the Powerplay multiplier of 4X for a prize of $200,000.

The winner has not come forward as of this writing, but we know they bought their ticket at Low's Variety in Alfred. Whoever the winner is they have up to a year to claim their prize.

If you are curious, the odds of matching four numbers plus the Powerball are approximately 1 in 913,129. To compare that to the king of odds measurement, the act of being struck by lightning in your lifetime, those odds are 1 in 15,300. The odds of winning the Powerball jackpot are 1 in 300,000,000.

If you should defy the odds and win a one billion dollar Powerball jackpot and take the lump sum, you'll be awarded $610,000,000. But before it even gets in your hands, $146,400,000 will go to Federal Taxes and $30,500,000 will go to Maine Taxes leaving you with a lump sum of $433 million. You get a bit more if you live in New Hampshire. Since they have no tax, you'll get $463 million.
