Tenney Mountain Planning a Comeback? NH Ski Area to Reopen for 2022-2023 Season

Plymouth, New Hampshire's Tenney Ski Mountain may be operating as a fully functioning ski mountain this upcoming 2022-2023 season.

Tenney Mountain brings back many memories for Granite Staters. For many, Tenney was a home, a place to learn to ski, and a convenient mountain, right of I-93 and close to Plymouth State University.

Tenney has gone through ups and downs since they opened in 1960. They had real financial troubles in the 80's between snowmaking and other expenses, according to a Concord Monitor article.

Tenney closed in 2010 due to many of the ongoing financial battles.

In 2014, however, Michael Bouchard purchased Tenney and got it operational again in 2016. When the pandemic struck, the hardships outweighed any profits being made. Tenney was forced to close in 2020.

You are about to have another ski mountain in New Hampshire.

Tenney Mountain has been purchased for a little over 6 million dollars by Northcountry Development Group, an affiliate of Timberline Construction, according to an Unofficial Networks article.

Michael Bouchard, who played an enormous role in maintaining Tenney Mountain and the legacy from 2014 to now, will still play a role in the mountain and development despite the sale to a larger firm, according to the Concord Monitor.

“The first phase resurrected the ski area," said Bouchard to the Concord Monitor. "COVID allowed us to transition to phase 2, to find a large developer, with deep pockets and skills to know how to handle a large project."

A larger developer with deeper pockets is exactly what they found.

“We have a ways to go on master planning … over the next year,” said Steven Kelly, CEO of Timberlane Construction, to Concord Monitor. “There’s been a lot of different versions of things going on. We’re taking a clean slate, meeting with all the key stakeholders – PSU (Plymouth State University), town of Bristol, town of Plymouth...this is a multi-year, phased approach.”

With the purchase of 900 acres on and around the ski mountain, the future of Tenney Mountain seems bright.

“I see Tenney as a huge opportunity,” Kelley said to Concord Monitor. The infrastructure’s there, the land is there to do a lot of great things, to boost the economy for the whole community.”

Talks of future hotels, homes, condominiums, research facilities, and student housing associated with PSU are all on the table, according to Concord Monitor.

“First we have to get things approved, then design it, then build it,” Kelley said. “It’s a process.”

For now, it's a waiting game.

The purchase has been made, the stars may align, and you may be able to ski at Tenney Mountain once again.
