1/12/1974 (42 years ago today) - Everybody loved this one: "You Don't Mess Around With Jim" by Jim Croce kicks off a five-week run at No. 1 on the U.S. album chart, thanks to the singles "Time In A Bottle" (also a No. 1), the title track (multiple weeks in the Top 10),  and "Operator (That's Not The Way It Feels)" which hit the Top 20. Aaahhh, the old days -- how about the fact one of 1972's biggest selling albums here was recorded in three weeks for under $18,000?

1/12/1977 (39 years ago today) - So, what else is new?: Keith Richards was fined $1,275 for possession of cocaine found in his car after The Rolling Stones guitarist had been involved in a car crash.

1/12/1951 - Born on this day, Chris Bell, guitarist for the highly influential cult band Big Star. Bell was killed in an automobile accident in December, 1978. Big Star's sound was a fantastic mix of Beatles/Stones/Byrds power-pop (remember, this was back when it was supposedly not so cool to do so) that essentially foreshadowed the "alternative rock scene of the 1980's and 1990's". Fact! Plus, they were from Memphis, so there you go...
