6/2/1962 (54 years ago today) - It's only one of the best singles ever recorded in history, so it's probably worth mentioning today: Ray Charles kicked off a five week run at No. 1 with his cover of the Don Gibson classic "I Can't Stop Loving You" (also a chart topper in the U.K.). Neil Young covered Don Gibson's "Oh, Lonesome Me" on the "After The Gold Rush" LP. Probably time to check out Mr. Gibson, doncha think...?

6/2/1973 (43 years ago today) - ...and you thought some of his Beatles stuff was making you feel old: Paul McCartney had both No. 1 spots here in the U.S. when "Red Rose Speedway" went to the top of the album chart and "My Love" started a four week run as the No. 1 single. The album is a much-maligned piece-o'-work in Macca's catalog -- may we suggest you go back and re-listen to "Big Barn Red"...yeah, there you go.

6/2/1981 (35 years ago today) - It's two years before he releases "1999" and he's the opening act for The Rolling Stones -- not an easy task, and making it even harder is the fact that not only is he unknown, he also chooses to perform in bikini briefs singing songs called "Jack U Off". Prince has his work cut out for him: on this date he makes his live British debut at London's Lyceum Ballroom; his act is so misunderstood that he will not return to the U.K. for another five years. 'Ahead of his time' is a stupid understatement, but we're going with it anyway...
