6/5/1960 (60 years ago today) - Robert Zimmerman (soon to be known as Bob Dylan) graduated from high school in Hibbing, Minnesota -- He was called "Bob" by his classmates in this remote rural community where the young soon-to-be-super-nova was (dis-)regarded him as a "greaser" because of his long sideburns and leather jacket. Like, coolsville, daddy-o's...

6/5/1964 (56 years ago today) - David Bowie released his first single, "Liza Jane", under the name Davie Jones with The King Bees -- The record was a rather catchy slice of R&B and got solid promotion, with appearances on noteworthy British TV variety/entertainment shows like Juke Box Jury, Ready Steady Go! and The Beat Room, as well as a hefty amount of BBC-radio airplay -- The end result? Excruciatingly poor sales leading to the band being dropped from their Vocalian Pop record label. Career re-boot time...

6/5/1975 (45 years ago today) - Pink Floyd are doing session work for the forthcoming "Wish You Were Here" album at Abbey Road Studios, London; while listening to a playback of "Shine On You Crazy Diamond" (their tribute to the band's founding member Syd Barrett), into the studio who d'ya think walks in but none other than Syd himself -- It's a truly weird moment: the song is actually about the guy that just showed up and absolutely no one recognized him!!! By this time, the 29-year-old Syd had shaved off all of his hair (including eyebrows) and was massively obese and overweight -- The current line-up of the Floyd can hardly believe it's Syd, who turns and leaves without saying goodbye; the band never sees him again...
