Today it's an all "sort-of-a-Beatles" edition of the calendar...

9/13/1965 (51 years ago today) - Paul McCartney's "Yesterday" was released as the next Beatles single here in the U.S. With only Paul's vocal/acoustic guitar and a string quartet, it was (essentially) the first "solo" performance under the group name, and it indeed sounded quite different from everything else that the band had done up to now -- so much so, in fact, that the boys vetoed its release as a single in the U.K.!!! It was finally issued as a single in England, under The Beatles name, in 1976.

9/13/1969 (47 years ago today) - You could call it "ramshackle", but genuine nonetheless...:John Lennon and Yoko Ono fly to Canada to perform at The Rock & Roll Revival Show in Toronto. Also on the bill: Chuck Berry, Gene Vincent, Bo Diddley, Jerry Lee Lewis, Chicago, Alice Cooper and The Doors! Minor detail: John's decision to appear was made so late that the band he put together -- Eric Clapton on guitar, Klaus Voormann on bass, and drummer Alan White -- actually had to practice and rehearse on the plane flight over from England! The set, which some say helped propel the Beatles break-up, was later released as the "Live Peace In Toronto 1969" album.

9/13/1965 - Happy Birthday to Zak Richard Starkey, son of Ringo and his first wife Maureen, 51 years old today. When Zak turned eight, he was given a drum kit by his "Uncle" Keith Moon; by age 12, having taught himself how to play (dad Ringo didn't really want his son in show-biz), Zak was already in his first band, called The Next. These days he's best known as the primary drummer for The Who -- though he's never officially become a member of the band, it's interesting to note that he's been their engine since 1994. Zak's also recorded and toured with Oasis, Johnny Marr, The Waterboys and Paul Weller.
