Today's date in 1980, an interesting mix o'stuff...

4/19/1980 (37 years ago today) - Blondie went to No. 1 on the singles chart with the classic "Call Me", from the not-so-much-a-classic-as-a-bad-B-movie "American Gigolo", starring Richard Gere who apparently still needed acting lessons at this point. The old Mystery Science Theater gang would have had a field day with this one...

4/19/1980 (37 years ago today) - Brian Johnson joined AC/DC, replacing original lead vocalist/front man Bon Scott. Brian was 32 years old at the time, and had cut his chops with hard-working-but-unsuccessful-bands like Fresh, The Gobi Desert Canoe Club (yes, their actual name!), and in the early '70's performed songs from the musical "Hair" with cabaret/club outfit The Jasper Hart Band. So, not a stretch to say hitchin' up with the Young brothers was the best thing that ever happened to him...

4/19/1980 (37 years ago today) - A cool rock night out, would've loved to have been part of it: R.E.M. played their first gig as R.E.M. at the 11:11 Koffee Club in Athens, Georgia. Even though the audience consisted of less than 150 people, the police closed the show down at 2 am because the venue was "unlicensed"! Really? That was the reason? At 2 am?
