A Portland Shout-Out in Queen Movie?
Well first of all, thanks to all the Blimpsters who joined us last Thursday for the WBLM premiere of movie, Bohemian Rhapsody at Flagship Premium Cinemas in Falmouth.
We had a great crowd of Maine Queen fans gathered to witness an amazing spectacle on the silver screen that made us love the band even more. And how 'bout that Rami Malek as Freddie Mercury? His performance of this inspiring man was nothing short of astounding!
Anyway, we could go on and on here, but let's get to the moment early in the film and early in the story of Queen's career when we swear we heard a shout-out to Portland. With various cities names flash across the screen while the voice of 'Freddie' cheers each one over the roar over the crowds.
Now of course when we heard Portland, that could be the other one in Oregon that is being referred to. But we choose to believe that they were giving the love to us here in Blimpville!
According to setlist.fm, Queen's first show in Portland, Oregon was in 1977 at the Paramount Theatre and the show here in Portland was at the Expo in 1974. Since this scene takes place early in Queen's touring days of America, we're sticking with that shout-out to Portland belonging to us!
Have you seen 'Bohemian Rhapsody' yet? If so, do you think the Portland mention was ours?
On Queen's first tour in the US 44 years ago, they opened for Mott the Hoople. An historic stop in Southern Maine happened at the Portland Expo on April 28, 1974.
You can listen to the whole show here! Pretty good audio quality too!
