Apple cider, football, and fall foliage—that’s what Maine does best. Well, at least this time of year.
Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to early fall, otherwise known as the chillest of all the seasons. The air is crisp, the colors are starting to pop, and one of Maine’s best times of the year is officially underway.
Has the Foliage Season Begun in Maine?
The season has officially begun, with reports dropping weekly now. According to maine.gov, "peak" season for Northern Maine is the end of September. That's followed by mid-October for Central and Western Maine, and then closer to the end of October for Southern Maine.
As we roll past mid-September, it's wonderful to see the leaves starting to change quite a bit. And thanks to the Maine Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry's Maine Foliage Report, we can see exactly where things stand.
Drumroll, please...
Apparently, Maine is celebrating the colors of the Green Bay Packers this week, because the green and yellow are covering the state. I mean, it's basically perfectly cut in half.
How Much Has the Foliage Season Begun in Western and Northern Maine?
It’s wonderful to see that we are finally underway, with a major portion of Maine officially getting into the season. Western and Northern Maine have officially entered the “low” stage, meaning the colors are starting to take off.

Even though the coast is still mostly green, that doesn’t mean you won’t be able to find some foliage. It just means the region still has a long way to go. But there’s no point in rushing the season. Let’s enjoy this wonderful time of year for as long as we can.
