New Documentary Focusing on Iconic Album Cover Art Set for Maine Premiere

A major part of music history is coming to Portland in July. This special film is something any fan of rock 'n roll will absolutely love.

Some of the most iconic album covers from rock's past will be discussed in a new documentary premiering at the Space Gallery in Portland on Wednesday, July 12.

The film is titled, "Squaring the Circle (The Story of Hipgnosis)." It's a wonderfully in-depth dive into the world of Hipgnosis, the studio that was responsible for some of the world's greatest album covers. Albums from bands like Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Paul McCartney, Peter Gabriel, and many others.

Hipgnosis was the work of artists Storm Thorgeson and Aubrey "Po" Powell. The film chronicles their work from their humble beginnings in the 1960s, to becoming rock icons by the time the 1970s were humming along. The pair would go down as being two of the most influential people in the industry. They have even been credited for helping grow genres of rock that may not have exactly been the most popular to begin with.

The film features many interviews with band members that were directly influenced by Hipgnosis. This includes McCartney and Gabriel, plus Nick Mason, Roger Waters, and David Gilmour from Pink Floyd. You will even see both Jimmy Page and Robert Plant from Zeppelin.
