No landmark in Maine shows what the state is all about quite like Portland Head Light.

Found in Fort Williams Park in Cape Elizabeth, this iconic lighthouse has helped guide sailors safely to shore since the late 1700s. It’s a beacon of light for both sailors and all who visit.

The lighthouse has long been a popular destination—and one of the most picturesque in America. But could it actually be the most beautiful lighthouse in the entire country?

Is Portland Head Light One of the Most Beautiful Lighthouses in America?

The folks over at Travel Magazine published an article ranking the most beautiful lighthouses in the United States. The list includes 20 of the most exquisite structures from coast to coast. And wouldn’t you know it—the very first featured is our own Portland Head Light.

It’s no surprise to see Portland Head Light receive such recognition. It’s easily one of the most recognizable structures in the region. And with its pristine landscaping and dramatic coastal views, it’s absolutely stunning.

Portland Head Light is said to be one of the most photographed lighthouses in America. That makes sense, considering how popular Fort Williams Park—the home of Portland Head Light—truly is. The number of Mainers and tourists who photograph it from the water must be quite significant. Oh, and I haven’t even mentioned the number of commercials and video productions featuring the famous light.

Here’s an excerpt from Travel Magazine on why it says Portland Head Light is one of America’s most beautiful beacons:

One of the oldest and most recognized lighthouses in America, Portland Head Lighthouse was commissioned by the nation’s first President, George Washington, and its beauty is said to have inspired the poetry of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow.

I mean, you really can’t go wrong if you’re inspiring one of the most legendary poets of all time. That’s some serious bragging rights.

As beautiful as it is to see from Fort Williams, I’d also recommend getting out on the water and viewing it from the ocean. It’s a true gem of a landmark—especially when seen from the perspective of sailors who’ve relied on it for over 200 years.

Best Ways to Experience Portland Head Light

This really is a can’t-miss destination when visiting southern Maine. And if you live here, there’s no reason not to go and enjoy everything that Fort Williams and Portland Head Light have to offer. Oh, and did I mention there are lobster rolls available right on site? What more do you need?
