Explore the Coast: Lighthouses Open to Visitors on Maine’s 2025 Open Lighthouse Day
It doesn't get more "Maine" than this: the annual Maine Open Lighthouse Day is just around the corner.
This beloved event takes place on Saturday, September 13, and offers a rare chance to step inside some of the state's most iconic lighthouses, as many open their doors to the public for the day.
Maine Open Lighthouse Day Has Become a Very Popular Annual Event
Over the years, this holiday for lighthouse lovers has become tremendously popular. According to the American Lighthouse Foundation, Maine Open Lighthouse Day draws an average of 15,000 to 18,000 enthusiasts each year.
It's a rare opportunity, as many of these lighthouses are only open sporadically—or exclusively on this day. The American Lighthouse Foundation notes that it’s not just a chance to make the climb, but also an opportunity to learn more about the rich history of these legendary lights.
Lighthouses from Across the State are Participating in Maine Open Lighthouse Day
The lighthouses can be found up and down the coast, giving plenty of options for Mainers and tourists alike. Popular lighthouses such as Portland Head Light, West Quoddy, and Pemaquid are participating. Plus, many offshore ones will be available for those who like a bit more of a challenge to get there. The Maine Maritime Museum and Maine Lighthouse Museum will also be participating in the event.
This year's event goes from 9am-3pm. However, some of the lighthouses will have different hours. You can find out more information here. The complete list of lighthouses participating can be found below.
