19 Presidents Have Come to Maine While Serving in the White House
Happy Presidents Day, everyone.
’Tis the season for remembering all the gentlemen we love to love or hate, make fun of, look up to, imitate, question, congratulate… you know, all the things.
In honor of today, the day we recognize the leaders of the greatest country in the free world, I thought it would be fun to connect it to a little Maine history.
What Sitting US Presidents Have Visited Maine?
I came across an old article from News Center Maine. The story, from 2020, focused on a political campaign stop in Guilford by President Donald Trump during his first term. The article detailed the numerous visits, vacations, campaign stops, town halls, and speeches that sitting presidents have made in Maine.
I must say, the list is pretty impressive. According to that article and MaineEncyclopedia.com, 19 presidents have spent some time in Maine during their terms in office. That’s 48% of all presidents since Maine became a state in 1820.
The first recorded visit was by James K. Polk, who came in 1847, and the most recent was Joe Biden, who visited in 2023. While there are some glaring omissions—like Abraham Lincoln and Ronald Reagan—the state can claim both Roosevelts and JFK as visitors.
The Bush Family Has the Strongest Presidential Connection to Maine
Of course, Maine’s most famous connection to the White House is a certain “Point” down in Kennebunkport, where two presidents spent significant amounts of time. In fact, the Bush home at Walker’s Point remains one of Maine’s most well-known landmarks.
Below is the list of 19 presidents who spent time in Maine during their presidency. While others have visited to campaign or vacation, these 19 are reportedly the only ones to have been here while in office. Do you know of another? We’d love to hear about it.
