It's not very often that you hear about places like museums looking to give money away, right? I mean, most of the time, places like museums are doing cool community fund raisers and drives to help keep themselves, and their exhibits, afloat.

That's why when we heard about a Maine museum that was looking to give away $25,000 to someone, we needed to investigate and see exactly what was going on. Turns out, however, that there really is a museum in Maine that wants to give away a serious pile of cash- but there is just a weeeeeeeeee bit of a catch. Ya gotta bring em' a space rock.

Let me elaborate a little bit, mmmkay? According to WABI TV 5, the museum, which is The Maine Mineral and Gem Museum located in Bethel, is the place offering up the cash for the rock. The rock? Well, they're just looking for a little piece of meteorite.

Not just any meteorite, though, The museum is looking for a piece of meteorite that reportedly came down in Maine over the weekend. According to WABI, witnesses reported hearing what was described as a sonic boom after seeing a large flash of light across the Maine sky on Saturday night in Calais, Maine.

Darryl Pitt,  of the Maine Mineral and Gem Museum, told WABI in part;

“It needs to look like it has a fresh crust. The result of burning through the atmosphere because that’s exactly what it’s what it experienced, it’s literally getting toasted as it burns through Earth’s atmosphere. So it’s fresh and black around it and with time is more water seeps into it if there’s enough metal it begins to oxidize a bit, but that’s why it’s important to get out there sooner than later because they’ll jump out a bit more and look less terrestrial like."

Darryl went on to say that people who may not be super-familiar with what the space rock should look like can pop into the museum to learn a little bit more about what they should be looking for.

If you, or someone you know finds this hunka hunka burning space debris, make sure you contact the museum right away- and then us so we can interview you on the air about it. And also try to extort some of the cash winnings out of you. Just kidding. But not really.
