8/11/1956 (60 years ago today) - Elvis Presley's double-a sided single "Don't Be Cruel"/"Hound Dog" is released; when it hits No. 1 a short time later, it stays there for eleven consecutive weeks -- a record run that would not be broken until 1992 by Boyz II Men's "End Of The Road".

8/11/1979 (37 years ago today) - 23 years after Elvis, we end up with.... this: The Knack start a five week run at No. 1 with their debut album "Get The Knack". There's just no other way to put it -- this album was a joke, and millions paid for it.

8/11/1943 - Born this day, one of the founding/original members of The Dave Clark Five, saxophonist Denis Payton. Denis not only played alto, tenor and baritone saxes for the group, he contributed to their classic catalog with his harmonica playing ("Catch Us If You Can"), did backing vocals (which the band should have gotten more credit for, really, their harmony vocals were top-notch-slick!, check out "Because"), played guitar and occasionally co-wrote with band leader Dave Clark. Those sax solo's were definitive DC5 highlights, especially "Can't You See That She's Mine". On December 17, 2006, Denis lost his battle with cancer; he was 63 years old.
