Cumberland County: Maine’s Most Intoxicated Region According to New Map
This just in: America loves its booze.
Okay, that’s not exactly news. This is a country that rebelled against rum taxes and prohibition. We created our own whiskey and beer industries. We have some of the best wine regions in the world. And some researchers believe that alcohol will be a billion-dollar industry by 2030. This is one boozy country.
What are the Drunkest Counties in the United States?
So, who is consuming the majority of this alcohol? Thanks to Intoxistates.com and Brilliant Maps, we now have a map that utilizes the CDC's guidelines on excessive drinking, which include binge drinking, underage drinking, heavy drinking, and drinking during pregnancy. Now, we can directly look at every county in America to see which are the drunkest.
Let’s have a look, shall we?
You know what? Maine isn't as drunk as I thought. In fact, the state is quite average, with an overall excessive drinking percentage of 20.49.
However, that doesn't mean there aren't a few outliers.
Maine's drunkest County Can be Found in the Southern Part of the State
First off, let's congratulate(?) Cumberland County, officially Maine's drunkest region. In fact, according to the map, it's the only county in Maine with an excessive drinking rate above 20%, coming in at 21.5%. While the highest, it's still not excessively high, which is certainly a positive.
Would it be nice to see Cumberland drop a few percentage points? Sure. But it could be a lot worse.
The polar opposite of Cumberland County is Aroostook. According to the map, "The County" is the driest in the state, with an excessive drinking rate of just 13.85%.
I must admit, I’m shocked by this. I would have totally guessed Aroostook would be the most wasted. I mean, what else is there to do up there other than eating and enjoying the outdoors, two ideal activities to enjoy a beverage or six.

As for the rest of the state, well, it's pretty average boozin'. These numbers are very similar to what we see in many parts of New England and the Mid-Atlantic.
The Drunkest State in America Can be Found in the Midwest
Maine certainly pales in comparison to the Midwest, specifically Wisconsin. Those cheeseheads apparently drink like every day is a Green Bay Packers tailgate. They are the Michael Jordan of drinkin’.
As for the dry states, well, no surprises there either. A good swath of the South and Utah take the cake. I’m surprised Utah was even included at all. I just assumed it would be an empty space where it normally is.
As fun as it is to look at this map, just remember, folks, please drink responsibly. Don’t be a dummy out there. And get some help if you feel you need it. Never let it take over your life.
