Portland to Host Maine’s First Lobster Roll Festival in July
Lobster rolls and beer; those are the two most likely things you'll be asked about by people "from away" that are visiting Maine. And while it's true that Rockland hosts their gigantic lobster fest every year, there seemed to be an open market for a lobster ROLL fest as well.
After all, how many beer festivals exist in Maine in a calendar year?
According to Kathleen Piece of the Bangor Daily News, Portland has jumped at the chance to be the host of Maine's very first lobster roll fest, happening July 8 at Thompson's Point.
The festival will also reportedly serve as a competition between 12 chefs from coast to coast, each offering up their rendition of the nation's best lobster roll. Guests will be able to sample all the lobster rolls and vote for the three they feel are the best, according to the BDN, and the final decision on the winner will come from a panel of judges.
But this is Maine, so any outdoor festival will be filled with additional food options, live music and beer provided by one of Portland's own, Allagash.
This inaugural Maine Lobster Roll festival is taking place because one that existed in New York fell apart. Most of the competitors agree, including former champions like Eventide Oyster and The Clam Shack in Kennebunk, that THE lobster roll festival belongs in Maine.
We couldn't agree more.
