Van Halen Had Quite the Touring History in Maine
One of the greatest rock bands of all-time has found itself recently in the news. It's for obvious reasons, considering one of its founding members has just released a memoir.
The book is called "Brothers," and was written by Alex Van Halen from a little band called Van Halen. Alex's memoir is all about he and late brother Eddie's upbringing, the formation of the band, and the trials and tribulations of being in a huge rock 'n roll band.
I don't have to tell you that Van Halen was an absolute monster. Starting back in 1973 and officially calling it quits after Eddie's death in 2020, VH released 18 total albums, which included an incredible 56 singles. They had 20 Top-5 Billboard Mainstream Rock songs, and "Jump" even went to number one on the Hot 100. The band would end up selling over 80 million records. Not too bad for a couple brothers from Holland.
Van Halen also won a Grammy, an American Music award, and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame back in 2007. Plus, they had two of the most iconic frontmen in the history of rock, with David Lee Roth and Sammy Hagar (I love Gary Cherone, but I can't put him up with those two).
With the release of Alex's book and previously unheard music, I thought it would be fun to look back at Van Halen's touring history in Maine. It's quite vast, to be honest. VH made many trips up to the Pine Tree State and played numerous venues.
To no surprise, Van Halen made the most Maine trips to Portland. The band played six shows in the then-named Cumberland County Civic Center, easily being the number one Maine spot. However, it wasn't just Portland. Trips to Bangor, Oxford Plains, and Old Orchard Beach were made by the Hall-of-Famers.
Below, you can take a closer look at Van Halen's history in Maine, from the first show back in 1978 to the final one back in 2015 in Bangor. How many did you attend?
