Maine’s Largest Non-Profit Music School Expanding in Portland
We are big fans of MAMM. The Maine Academy of Modern Music. Think of them as the School of Rock for Maine! MAMM serves over 1,000 students each year and half of these students receive scholarships so that they may participate in the program. MAMM collaborates with other organizations who also serve at-risk youth such as Long Creek Youth Development Center, Preble Street Teen Center, Maine Seacoast Mission, and Portland Public Schools.
The big news coming from MAMM this week is that they are expanding their operation to downtown Portland. Their new space will be located in the historic Walker Manual Training School building located at 45 Casco St which is also the home of a number of other businesses including David Hembre - Architect, Inc., Jill McGowan Inc. design studio, BarSculpt, DJ Jon, and The Studio Portland, a professional recording studio that has operated there since 1981
This will be MAMM's second location in Portland. In 2015 MAMM opened its main office space at 125 Presumpscot St.
Here's what the new place will look like. Pretty awesome new rehearsal spaces and access to a recording studio next door. Big time!
"This beautiful new space will allow us to better serve our students that live on the Portland peninsula who cannot easily travel to our Presumpscot St location," says MAMM director and founder Jeff Shaw. "Likewise, it will also bring us closer to a number of our partner organizations such as the Preble Street Teen Center and King Middle School allowing us to further deliver on our mission of making our programs accessible to all students."
We love the MAMM Mission. From their website:
Song by song, Maine Academy of Modern Music (MAMM) aspires to provide Maine youth with the discipline, freedom, and guidance to appreciate the thrill of making contemporary music, instilling in them the power of self-expression. MAMM is dedicated to building leadership through the musical arts.
