According to WGME, today kicks off Maine's moose hunting season.

Maine divides up the season, the "bulls only" stretch goes on now through September 28th and is limited to parts of northern Maine. Check out the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife website for all moose hunting dates and information.

The longest run of the moose hunt is from November 4th to November 30th, any moose is fair game in central and western Maine during that time.

Getting a moose license is by lottery only, and this year there were 59,185 applicants vying for only 2,820 of them. That number is a small increase from the amount of licenses given out last year.

The hunt is on from a half hour before sunrise to a half hour after the sun sets. Even if you aren't a hunter, it's good to know when hunting season is in effect so that you can keep your family and pets prepared and safe. Before going on a hike make sure that hunting isn't allowed in that area, and dress yourself and dog in hunter orange.
