Monday Westbrook's City Council unanimously approved to remove parking spaces within 20 feet of downtown crosswalks for pedestrian safety, the Press Herald reports.

According to the article, the measure comes after an accident where a car struck and  killed Clifford Verrill, 67, in early September as he was attempting to cross the street in Westbrook.

The paper reports the city will use paint and signs to mark the new parking plan and the move could even lead to some curbing changes, according to Discover Downtown Westbrook Executive Director Abigail Cioffi, who added the new plan has a minimal loss of parking spaces in the city with a total of just 12 spaces being lost.
