41 years ago today, the Electric Light Orchestra landed their sonic spaceship in Blimpville for a sold-out show at the Civic CenterThis was their only appearance in Portland, Maine, ever.

It happened on September 29, 1978 and was part of a tour called, The Big Night. And you can bet there was absolutely no lack of fog machines and cosmic lasers to set the scene for an incredible evening of symphonic rock.

The 9 month, 92 date trek went all over the world in support of their double-album, Out of the BlueJeff Lynne and company also played at London’s Wembley Stadium during this tour and did an historic 8 sold-out nights in a row.
